K.I.S.S.

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , at 2:40 pm by Gina

K.I.S.S- Keep It Simple Stupid. This infographic is simple, it makes life seem simple with not a lot of gray parts to deal with. We all know life is not simple (“nobody said it was easy,”) but maybe just knowing that and not fighting it so much is what we need to do. If we keep it simple we won’t stress about things we can’t control. We won’t overthink the why’s and how’s (“everything happens for a reason.”) We will make decisions simply because we know that whatever decision we make is what it is (“if it changes your life- let it.”) We will be nice to everyone, and we won’t let the other bring us down (“love the people who treat us right and forget about the ones who don’t.”)

KISS can be applied to anything: from scheduling to over-accessorizing. From analyzing dates gone wrong to ensuring the next date is better. What do you think about this concept? I’m not a fan of the “stupid” part, but I figure its just a way to make a good acronym, one that often has a positive motive.

~Gina

My favorite part: “If you get a chance-take it. If it changes your life-let it.” That’s never an easy thing to do! Still, I think it can make life that much more beautiful.

Sunday Wrap Up

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , at 2:46 am by Gina

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone!

I hope everyone is enjoying their long weekend! The weather is beautiful and if you feel anything like I have lately you needed this weekend! I hope you took some time to relax! 🙂

1. This blog, ColorMeKatie, by freelance photographer and street artist Katie Sokoler has so much feel-good art its sure to life your spirits! In one post she admits, “Many people in my family suffer from depression. It’s one of the main reasons I decided to become a photographer. I wanted to create colorful, positive, feel good images.” I think it works! And her style is so fun! For instance she painted her walls white so that she could continually change the background of her room with paper or paint etc. Another one of my favorites is her “thought bubble” work. Check it out!

2. This is a tumbler page that I stumbled upon via facebook (because I’m a big creeper) of my friend Erin’s work. She is in her second year at Columbus College of Art and Design and I am completely fascinated by her, and all the friends I have who followed their passion and went to an art school!! Fascinated and maybe a little bit jealous too 🙂

3. This is a little random (ok a lot random) but I thought it was appropriate, or at the very least funny. Recently my friend reintroduced me to my xanga (like an online diary similar to blogs.) I wrote on my xanga all through eighth grade and freshman year and the posts are often hilarious. One post I found while rereading my long lost online diary had this list, something I thought could be found at becauseiamawoman. It made me laugh to think that in many ways I haven’t changed much, despite all the years since.

“Obvious but overlooked things that life offers that make ME happy-
Optimists, Non-profit organizations, Constellations, Babies, Smiles!!, Music!!!!, Complements, Nature, Aromatherapy, Sleeeeeeep, Eating healthy, Swinging, Singing!!, Meditating, Trying new things, Waving to people, Laughing!

Some of the not so obvious things that life as to offer that makes me happy-
(Remember this is not obvious, usual things lol)

Sour patch kid, candy bars (homemade!), Silk bugs (they make silk and silk is awesome), Commercial jingles, Sparkles and colors, Smiles!!, Light, Breezes on hot days, Free Will, Emotions, Books, Dry-Erase boards, Flavored ice-cubes, Watermelon, Clouds in the shape of things, Very unique personalities, Tie-dyed things, Disney movies!!

This is just a short list. lol I had fun. and that made me happy also!! lol comment on what u think or if u have anything to add, remember I tried to steer clear of the obvious friends and family type thing because everyone knows that makes them happy.

-Tuesday July 26th 2005”

haha woooow. please excuse the use of the letter “u” in replace of the word “you,” I was 14!! haa Anyway feel free to add to either list! It’s fun and a sure way to get you thinking positively!

Remember to thank any veterans you know or love! My prayers go out to both my grandpas 🙂

Love, Gina

My Dream Place To Live Is…

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , at 7:00 pm by Gina

HI readers!

This Finish the Sentence Tuesday is not what I was originally planning on asking, but I was much more excited about this sentence than my original so lets go with it!

I am in the final stages of my process to study abroad this Fall 2010. Friday I officially registered for classes and yesterday I secured my financial aid. I will be studying abroad in Florence, Italy from September 1 through December 18th this year. It is absolutely my dream come true- from as far back as I can remember! Countless old journals can be used as proof of my Italy obsession and my dream to not only visit, but stay!

While all this is very exciting, after getting the numbers back on the cost, I couldn’t help but be demoralized. The expense is STAGGERING! I am paying for college on my own, something I am completely understanding of, and loans are truly the only way to make that possible. Next year I will be taking out $25,000 in loans (something I wasn’t sure I should share but thought I’d go for anyway.)

Thus the sentence of the week. Italy is my DREAM place.

Dream- • a cherished aspiration, ambition, or ideal
• an unrealistic or self-deluding fantasy
• a person or thing perceived as wonderful or perfect

Yes, it is all those things!! It is unrealistic to take out that much money (on top of three other years) when I know I won’t make much as a writer. It is also something I perceive as wonderful, perfect, completely ideal. It is my aspiration and I’m going for it! Would you?

Let me know what you think! and don’t forget to finish the sentence! Where is your dream place to live?

Love you all,
Gina

Yes!

Readers-

Lately I’ve been feeling blah about myself. Nothing too bad, no worries. The only reason I’m posting this is because I don’t want you to think that by any means I always think positively or always feel great about my work/my actions/my body. Thats ok though, because in the end I’ll always turn/try to turn the positive way instead. 🙂

Now for the star of the post! Jessica!

How AMAZING is this? This little girl knows how to do it! Stand in front of your mirror and sing, dance, scream what you love! Make that mirror your friend instead of your constant foe. Anyway, I really liked this short video and the adorable and adorably brilliant little girl.

Your disgustingly corny friend,

I Feel Beautiful When…

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , at 8:16 pm by Gina

Ciao everyone!

This “Finish The Sentence Tuesday” is a hard one for me, so I figured it was perfect! Sometimes forcing yourself it’s necessary and beneficial to think about things like this and to confront yourself with something positive instead of negative. I don’t know what makes me feel beautiful when asked right away, as I’m sure many of you don’t- but give it a try!

I feel beautiful when…
1. I’m not thinking about my body at all, and just enjoying the moment for once
2. I’m laying with the person I love
3. I’m doing something I know I’m good at.
LASTLY:
4. When I’m smiling!!

This list is certainly not all-inclusive, but they were some instances I thought of that I tried to have the guts to share! So let me hear you! Even if you don’t want to comment and share, I encourage you to think of the moments when you feel most beautiful, because like I said, its important to realize that and to realize that you ARE beautiful! Love you!

~Gina

p.s. For those of you who are new or just for a general recap: “Finish The Sentence Tuesday” is exactly what it sounds like. We’ll choose a sentence and we wanna hear your ending! As always, if you have an idea/sentence/anything- comment! let us know and we will probably use it for a Tuesday! Thanks!

Three Blessings I Have In My Life Are…

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , at 2:09 pm by Gina

Hi all!

Wow, first let me say I’m sorry it has been an entire week since our last update, I promise that won’t happen again (anytime soon at least.) Anywho we are back to finish the sentence Tuesday and I would love to hear from all of you again! and your friends!

Today it is rainy and dreary and only a Tuesday. I didn’t get much sleep and I have a lot to do. In response to this I think its time to remember our blessings, the good things we have in our lives and the reason they are good. While it won’t make the rain go away, perhaps it will clear the junk out of my mind and at the very least remind me of something positive, something sunshine-y 🙂

I’m going to make just one stipulation- no putting “family, friends, my health.” BORING! We are ALL thankful for our family and friends and health (and various other “duh” blessings) so I challenge you to think of something a little different, make it specific if it’s about these things, tell a little story, contemplate for longer than the normal three seconds. I’m sure it will be good!

So here goes,

Three blessings I have in my life are…

1) Ohio University:
I know that many students struggle with their first year of college. Sometimes they don’t fit with the school and often they don’t know what they want to study- it’s a big decision for a 17/18 year old, and not an easy one. That’s why I feel completely blessed when I’m reminded over and over again that OU is the right school for me. This doesn’t mean that there haven’t been problems, stress, or other issues, what it does mean is that Fall, Winter, and now Spring I have found myself walking down the streets of Athens and realizing that I love it here, problems, stress, issues and all.

2) Open-minded parents:
This might seem like a weird one, but I guarantee you my mother understands. I am like my mom in a whole lot of ways- a “free” personality being one of them. In the past few years I have scared them by almost choosing a school in New York City, taking a flight to Ghana by myself and telling my mother I would be teaching English as a second language soon. I signed up to study abroad in Italy and I’ve thrown numerous parties at my house while they are away. What I’m saying is, I know that sometimes I dream big, and I am blessed that I have parents who not only are getting used to it, but are supporting me as well. I think everyone can understand, whether you have it or not, a parents support makes a difference.

3) Internet:
Sweet, sweet internet. I use the internet daily, 5 million times a day probably. I stay connected with my friends and family (thank God!) I read blogs, I update blogs, I do my homework, I check the weather, I read the news. While I am always an advocate of going outside, being active, doing something that doesn’t involve technology, I also am constantly amazed at the numerous positive things the internet can help one accomplish. It can start movements, change elections, share ideas. It can serve as a link for every internet-accessing person on this earth. I don’t watch T.V. anymore at all (really, the last thing I watched was the Cavs game and I had to use a friends T.V.) and I can’t say I’m upset about that. I am blessed to have internet connection to seek out positive media messages instead!

These are three blessings that I have in my life right now. Obviously I have many, many more, including my friends, my dad, sister and nephew, my health, my strikingly good looks (hahahah just kidding!) But for now ima focus on these three!

Have a blessed day!

What I Wish For In This Moment Is…

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , at 7:56 pm by Gina

Hi readers,

Today is our second weekly “finish this sentence…” and the sentence to be finished is the title of this post!! Let me preface this post by saying that I am typically an advocate for being happy with the present moment just the way it is, I think you will find it is the way to be truly happy. But I am human just like you and of course am not happy with every moment. I often have expectations that don’t come true or responsibilities I don’t want to have. It’s those moments that make me wishful for something else.

What I wish for in this moment is… to be somewhere, anywhere, with my three best friends on earth (all of whom are very far away), relaxing and laughing and not doing one single important thing. I don’t care if there are other people with us- the more the merrier! I don’t care what we’re doing, as long as we are together and happy and I don’t have to be in my room on a beautiful day scrambling to finish the million and one tasks I have to complete before tomorrow.

In acknowledging this wish out loud, I hope I can come to terms with it, and let it float away for the time being. School is not always fun or easy (hardly ever) but it serves its purpose just as much as friends do. Plus, if I finish my work quickly enough, I may just be able to hang out with other friends and act as if I never felt stress this entire day 🙂

So share! Pass it on to others, anyone who you would want to hear an answer from!! We love to hear from you ❤

Wishing you a great day!

Your Lists!

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , , , at 6:59 pm by Gina

Ladies!

First, let me say THANK YOU for sharing your lists with me, for the encouragement and also for such a personal glimpse into your minds! I can’t explain how much joy this brought me! Reading over the comments there were DEFINITELY some themes (many themes actually.) The ones I tallied the most of though went something like this (highly paraphrased of course):

Surround yourself with positive people then always, always, ALWAYS appreciate those special people. Your amazing friends and family members, they are more valuable than you can imagine. Make sure you keep in touch with these people no matter how far and make sure to let them know how much they mean to you from time to time.

Find something you love and go for it! Follow your passion and HAVE passion- it is more essential to your day to day life than first meets the eye.

Get your feelings out rather than bottling them in. It is better to express yourself- whether that is through writing, drawing, singing, dancing, talking, laughing, or smiling. Never forget to smile and to LOVE YOURSELF!

And lastly, as much as all of us teenagers don’t show it, the number one most common response was to love your Family- particularly your mother. To say thank you, appreciate them, listen to them, work to spend time with them instead of doing everything you can to leave. Don’t take your family for granted- life is short.

These responses were all amazing, but something I got even greater joy out of was the feeling of community the responses gave me- even through the internet. Amanda quoting Regina, people reading other peoples lists and borrowing aspects of it, compliments given (thanks Allie!) and even more exciting, Patricia V. Davis actually commented!! Thats right, the author of the original list, founder and editor-in-chief of Harlots Sauce Radio and e-magazine, author of multiple poems on women’s issues and keeper of a bossy blog COMMENTED THIS BLOG!!! We’re practically famous! haha It’s because I am a woman! 🙂

Thank you all!

10 Things I’d Love To Tell My Younger Self

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , at 7:46 pm by Gina

Hello readers!

I saw this article from another blog I follow and immediately followed the link to read on. From Patricia Volonakis Davis, founder and editor-in-chief of Harlots’ Sauce Radio and e-magazine and author of her own memoir, we get a list of things learned. I’m just going to repeat exactly what she posted (boys you can get something out of this as well):

“I’ve learned some valuable things about life, love and being female over the past half-century. Here is the advice I try to pass on to younger women in my life (family and friends) in the hope that it will save them some precious time:

1) You are at least ten times prettier than you think you are.
That holds true no matter how pretty you already think you are! Don’t believe me? Ask your mother/auntie/grannie if she thought she was pretty when she was twenty. She’ll say, “no.” Then find a photo of her at that age. See what I mean?

2) The only thing you should be faking is confidence.
If you don’t have it yet, pretend you do. In every new situation, pretend you’re not nervous, pretend you’re not afraid. After a few times doing this, the pretend part disappears.

3) Want to try something new, like painting, skiing, running your own business? Go to the library and borrow ten different books on the subject.
Skim through them all, find the ones that have the most vital information and study them. Then see number 2.

4) No matter how old you get, remember what it was like to be a nine-year old girl.
Remember the feeling of freedom. If you’ve already forgotten, do a cartwheel. You can so still do one. Savour that feeling. Wake up with it every day. You’ll stay young until the day you die.

5)In the same vein, cut or potted flowers are never a waste of money.
Because every time we glance at them, they remind us how much beauty there can be in the world.

6) Speaking of money, starting right this moment, whether you’re twenty or sixty, you can change your finances around.
Don’t leave someone else completely in charge, whether it’s your husband, partner, parents or banker. Become financially saavy. Financial independence gives you the freedom to walk away from many bad situations. How do you know you’re in bad situation? See number seven.

7) If your stomach hurts and you haven’t got a virus, you’re in a bad situation.
Before you know what it is, your stomach always does. Give yourself some time to ponder what it might be that’s making your stomach hurt. Chances are you already do know, you just don’t want to believe it, for some reason. You can ignore advice from your friends, even your own brain, but you can’t ignore your stomach, because the stomach never lies. Oh, and by the way? – Drowning your stomach in alcohol won’t make it stop telling you the truth, either.

8 ) When meeting someone new and he or she seems to be behaving like an assh*le, show compassion first.
If after you display your sincere compassion, they are still acting like an assh*le, walk away. If they follow you, call the police.

9) Wear sunscreen on your face, neck and hands every day, winter and summer.
I don’t care how dark your skin naturally is. Wear it. You’ll remember me when you look in the mirror at age fifty. Always keep in mind that Your body is directly connected to your spirit. Look after your body. Exercise, floss and brush your teeth. Put nothing in your body that can permanently harm your spirit, including the wrong man.

10) And if you are in bed with a man and he’s the right man:
…meaning your stomach doesn’t hurt, he’s smiling at you, he knows your name, he’s not drunk and neither are you–for godsakes–enjoy yourself. He is not at all thinking about how fat your thighs look.

What warm, positive words on a cold day! So here is the challenge, make your own list! It can be 20, 10, 5, even 3 things (it is YOUR list after all) that you would love to tell yourself. Don’t list regrets, life is too short for that, rather, list the things you have the wisdom to see now, that you didn’t at a younger age and

    let us hear them!!

To encourage you all to share I’ll post my list:
1) Trust, love, and count on yourself, or else you’ll never be able to do those things for somebody else.
2) You really are prettier than you believe
3) Read and constantly educate yourself
4) Brush your teeth more often and wear your retainer!
5) Forgive and Forget a few more times, in the end love is better than resentment.
6) Talk to your grandparents more, you can’t imagine how much you’ll miss them when they’re gone.
7) On that note, don’t fight with your parents as much. Sure they are crazy, but to them so are you!
8 ) Never let other’s thoughts change the path you want to take
9) STOP worrying about money so much
10) STOP worrying so much in general, it’s hard but possible.

Love yourself!

Winter Blues

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , at 5:19 pm by Gina

Ciao everyone,

Well school has started again, the packing, moving and unpacking is accomplished and a routine will inevitably fall into place. What is not so inevitable is me getting used to walking in this weather! At 22 degrees with a wind chill that makes it feel like 7 degrees, going out much seems borderline insane! Still, I have a lot of goals and extra-curricular’s I’m involved in and I can only hope that I become a pro at extreme “bundling up.”

I think winter can be a hard time for anyone, but after a little research I found that women suffer Seasonal Affective Disorder the most. 75-80% of people who suffer from SAD are women with the majority being over 30. Often it is caused from a simple lack of light but heredity, age and chemical makeup play a part as well.

Even if one doesn’t suffer from SAD- it is easy to get into a similar type of “winter blues.” Being stuck inside all day, with constant cold and gray skies does not lend itself to a rousing good time! So I challenge everyone to make the most out of their winter. Yes I know, we are all very busy, but I find that in the nicer months we somehow make time to enjoy the elements and our day, so why not in winter also? Go for a walk after dinner despite the cold! Make a snowman, clean your house of clutter to prevent cabin fever, grow a plant indoors for some greenery, open your curtains all the way during the day to let the sun in. Savor and enjoy your hot tea/coffee/cocoa, take a bubble bath, go ice-skating or rediscover the fun things there are to do indoors!

Ha I know I sound corny, but maybe it will help! My plan to not get into a winter slump is to take a slightly smaller workload, stick with a workout plan that includes yoga (something I often give up despite my extreme love for it), let myself have the broccoli cheddar soup, and hopefully build a snowman at some point!

Tell me how you feel about winter! Do you get irritable and moody as many do? Do you love the snow? What is your favorite winter activity- whether inside or outside? A funny story, a question, a fact- anything!

Best friends forever,
~Gina

hahaha 🙂
